Background

Eric L. Veal Jr is a native of Chicago, IL. Eric has served in numerous capacities in his community; he is the first African American president of the Illinois State Board of Education Student Advisory Council and the co-chair of the Illinois State Educational Equity Committee, making him the first-ever student to co-chair of a state-mandated committee in Illinois. Eric has been a champion for systemic change, equity, and inclusion in schools across the country, having presented at a plethora of conferences and events for all educational stakeholders. He has also worked to create more equitable curriculum and created two courses (one being a dual credit college course), all stemming from his love of providing all students with a curriculum that they can connect to.

At Michigan

Eric is a Sophomore studying Political Science and Secondary Education. Since transitioning to the University of Michigan, Eric has joined numerous organizations such as Omega Omega Omega Mental Health Fraternity, Black Student Union, and Michigan Political Consulting. Eric additionally serves on the Vice President of the Student Life Advisory Board. He served as a housing intern for the Diversity Equity and Inclusion department during his first year and now serves as a Diversity Peer Educator in his West Quadrangle community. In this role he examines the climate of our campus, community, and students and the role it plays in the everyday lives of students, especially ones of traditionally marginalized backgrounds. He has also formerly participated in the Residence Hall Association, Arts Chorale, and Sigma Gamma Rho Black Male Highlight. Eric is devoted to supporting and building his community; he participates in a plethora of philanthropic activities and causes.

Within CSG

Eric has worked tirelessly to uplift student voices over his first term. Within this short time, he has sponsored and endorsed a plethora of resolutions that have helped hold up his tenets of accessibility, affordability, sustainability, and accountability. He has worked with numerous organizations to ensure that student voices are amplified not only within Central Student Government but to the administration and the campus at large. Eric also serves in leadership within CSG as the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Chair, Ethics Committee Chair, as well as the Executive Nominations Chair. In his time in assembly, Eric has worked to bring in voices to CSG that are traditionally not heard, as well as take CSG to the spaces that students are already in. Eric believes that the work is not done yet to create a better Michigan, but we must all be invested and continue the great work that the foundation has been laid for.
